Val seems to be interested in humor, sadness, and the macabre in just about equal amounts. These all blend perfectly in his original fiction webcomic: BCDE. His visual and writing styles have evolved a lot over the comic's run, but the sincerity and poignant moments in this otherwise edgy and sarcastic work have always been at its underbelly. His work consistently feels authentic. At the risk of spoiling the ending of a touching arc, I embedded one of my personal favorite installments of BCDE above, because it rings true: the world does need more artists.

He's also launched a nonfiction historical comic series at Comics Chronicle, which includes an installment on LGBTQ+ history and film, and an installment on the history of the vaccine. These exemplify the power of art as a political and educational tool. Strongly recommend.
